SF Design Week 2019: Design Disciplines in Flux by IxDA-SF in partnership with SF SDN

“Design Disciplines in Flux” will give Designers an opportunity to explore the future of our discipline as a community.

In the past, the Design discipline responded to needs and demands for specific perspectives and skill sets with a fragmentation into various sub-disciplines, such as Interaction Design, the closely related UX and Product Design, and other specializations such as Service Design.

At this interactive panel event, leading practitioners, educators, and thought-leaders from both Interaction Design and Service Design will put forward their positions on the current state of their respective Design discipline(s), and how they see them evolving in the near- and long-term future.

This hand-picked panel of experts will be able to give us both the 10.000 feet view on challenges and opportunities that the Design discipline(s) are tackling today in industry, but also give us real-life case studies and examples of how Design is evolving to meet these new needs and demands of tomorrow.

Contributing from their various backgrounds and specific perspectives, they will shine a light on what it looks like to practice Interaction Design and Service Design, respectively, what the strengths are of each perspective, differing organizational set-ups and impact, and how the two disciplines might complement or converge to meet tomorrow’s needs of the Design discipline overall.

Leaders from both the San Francisco Interaction Design Association and the Service Design Network will provide context with a brief historical overview of the disciplines and their recent evolution.

Following the presentation of the panelists’ position statements, a “walking workshop” will take place, with several stations around the room, staffed by panelists and IxDASF/SDN leaders. Attendees will be invited to discuss the themes that emerged, and the underlying key questions discussed in the panel, at each individual station directly in conversation with each other and the speakers and organizers of this event.

This event is designed to invite flexible attendance, i.e. we invite attendees to stay for the whole event, or just for a part of it, and for attendees to dip in and out of the station discussions as they see fit.

The event will conclude with a report-out and final discussion of the key take-aways from both the panel and the walking workshop explorations.

Maria Cordell has worked at the intersection of design, technology, and science throughout her career. Today she’s a design lead at Apple applying user-centered design and research to artificial intelligence projects. She was previously Design Director at Adaptive Path, Principal UX Architect at Macquarium, and Chief Technologist at Dod/Pritchard. Over the years, Maria has delivered strategy and design for Adobe, Apple, AT&T, Capital Group, Capital One, Chick-fil-A, Disney, Getty Images, John Muir Health, and UPS. Maria holds a Master of Science in Information Design and Technology, and a BS in Physics with Honors, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She’s been involved with IxDA since 2008, when she started IxDA Atlanta, and became an IxDA SF leader in 2010.

Chris Risdon is Director of Design for a peer-to-peer carsharing service, Getaround. Previously, Chris was Head of Design for Capital One Labs and a Design Director for Adaptive Path, the pioneering experience design consultancy. Chris has introduced and advanced new methods in design, teaching thousands of design professionals and students. An independent product / design leader focused on products and services that impact our society at large and individuals within it. She spent the first part of her career in design consulting for firms like frog design, Cooper, and LUNAR. Recently, she was Head of Design at PG&E, California’s largest energy company, she has led the design of the hardware and software of a next-generation surgical system, and served as VP of Product at GreatSchools.org. Her past clients include Virgin Records, Samsung, Johnson & Johnson, and Intel. Gretchen is a Bay Area native who left only long enough to get a bachelor’s degree from Harvard in History & Literature.

Raphaelle has 15-years of design and growth strategy leadership. She currently leads a service design team at Wells Fargo, where her team develops and uses qualitative and quantitative insights to deliver experience and design strategy for new products and services. She leverages multiple sources of VOC to share the realities of the customer’s perspective internally and foster a culture of customer-centricity. She has worked at the cutting edge of precision medicine, new media, and new design disciplines like UX and service design. Raphaelle holds a Masters in Economics and Marketing with Honors from Sciences-Po Lille (France) and contributed graduate level research to international children’s rights as a PhD student at CUNY. She studied Interior Design and Architecture at UC Berkeley which gave her the confidence to trust her imagination.

Iran loves to make things that are both useful and beautiful. Now at the City of San Francisco as Sr Service Designer, formerly at Adaptive Path’s Visual Design practice, she had a focus on visual storytelling for service design. She also enjoys teaching and speaking about service design, graphic design, and their intersection. Iran has practiced Service Design for many years, and has close to 20 years of graphic design and art direction experience across a wide range of industries and media, including retail, finance, advertising, tech, and the arts. Her work has been recognized by design publications and organizations including the Type Director’s Club, HOW Magazine, Surface Magazine, and AIGA’s annual “50 Books/50 Covers” competition. She has a BFA in graphic design from California College of the Arts. When not at work, Iran likes to be outside as much as possible, hiking or riding her motorcycle. If she’s inside, chances are she’s cooking, reading, mixing drinks, or making art.

Kristian Simsarian is a leading expert in innovation, design, creativity, technology, and education with over 25 years of experience. His mission is to increase the overlap of wisdom and technology. He believes in the power of creativity and design to humanize, enrich and positively transform the world. At age 25, an international committee of scientists selected Kristian as one of a dozen NATO distinguished fellows in robotics. In the 1990’s because the money for AI and robotics was coming from the military, Kristian moved to IDEO, a firm known for foregrounding human-centeredness and declining military work. At IDEO, Kristian served for eighteen years as a design and business leader, and later advisory fellow, helping build IDEO into the innovation powerhouse it is today. He has helped fortune 100, startups, governmental and non-profit organizations grow their offers, create design teams and scale design for better impact. Kristian holds several patents and peer-reviewed publications and his work was featured in business design books and periodicals including The New York Times, Business Week, Time Magazine, Huffington Post as well as BBC and MSNBC. He focused his career on developing radically new pedagogy, processes, and toolsets for increasing the capacity to humanize technology. Notably, Kristian brought 21st-century STEaM education to design students as founding chair of two California College of the Arts Interaction Design Programs, an award-winning BFA, and a new innovative Masters. He sits on the advisory board of the Berkeley Greater Good Science Center and a few other non-profits.

Daniela Busse (Ph.D.) focuses on research and incubation of breakthrough, design-led innovation and future experiences, at Oracle Marketing Cloud (as Head of Research), and prior to that at Citi Ventures (as Director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships in the office of the Chief Innovation Officer). In the past, Daniela served as Design Futurist/Innovation Lab Director at Samsung Research America, as Experience Innovation Director at SAP’s Office of the CEO, and as Design Researcher at Microsoft’s Office Design Group. Through her award-winning work, she defines ground-breaking new uses and designs for technologies, for future roadmap ideation and product experience incubation. Daniela received her Ph.D. in Computing Science (Human-Computer Interaction/Cognitive Modeling) from Glasgow University (Scotland, UK), and also her summa cum laude degrees in both CS and Psychology. She holds multiple patents, is a sought-after speaker, and has published frequently in the field of Design, Research, and Innovation. She is a Leader of IxDA – San Francisco, San Francisco’s IxD community of over 5000 members, and a total online network of over 10.000 Designers and design related professionals, students, educators, and thought-leaders in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
