UX in OUTER SPACE

An exciting night of talks on the weirdness and challenges of designing for user experience in orbit and beyond.

TALKS & SPEAKERS

The Hacker's Guide to the Galaxy - Ariel Waldman (Spacehack.org)
A hack is a quick solution to a problem – maybe not the most elegant solution, but often the cleverest. Ariel will highlight some of the lovable and lame UX from our galaxy, and how to hack it.

Would You Trust a Space Suit Designed by Hollywood? - Chris Noessel (Cooper) & Nathan Shedroff (CCA)
Sometimes sci-fi characters drift out into space, wearing only a collaboration between the prop and costume departments. Christopher & Nathan will review the best of these spacesuits, some of the worst, and share lessons that real world designers can take away for their non-sci-fi work.

The User Experience of a Space Station  - Sam Hashemi (NASA)
What kind of software would you design to support astronauts aboard a space station? Let's find out.

Mission Operations for Space - Tom Dayton (NASA)
Space missions are supported by ground operations teams of particular kinds of people in particular situations doing particular tasks using particular tools—some software, some not. But all those factors vary across mission phases, missions, vehicles, jobs, and organizations. Tom will summarize the major versions of all those that he has encountered, and how participatory design methods and object-oriented style user interfaces can be used effectively in all those situations.

UX for ET: Engaging Extraterrestrials at Interstellar Distances  - Douglas Vakoch (SETI Institute)
In the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), scientists listen for signals from alien civilizations living around distant stars. If they find a signal, what should we say in reply? Can we realistically hope for mutual comprehension with an independently evolved species?

Designing for Super Models and Astronauts - Andrew Crow (GE)
Today's designers face bigger challenges than ever before. Devices, locations, services, APIs, audience - all moving targets, each with their own demands. Andrew will show how designing for astronauts is remarkably similar to designing for super models and offer some out of this world solutions.
